Important notes on choosing godparents
The Church of England requires the candidate to have at least one godfather and one godmother. Traditionally, two godparents of the same sex as the child and one of the opposite sex are chosen.
Church law requires godparents to be baptised and confirmed. While the requirement for baptism is absolute, the requirement for confirmation may be waived at the vicar’s discretion (e.g. if the prospective godparent is a regular member of a church congregation that doesn’t practice confirmation, or if the prospective godparent attends church worship for 3 Sundays during the preparation tome).
Friends of the parents who are not baptised, confirmed, or regular churchgoers can be involved in the service as supporters rather than godparents. If you have trouble identifying suitable godparents, the vicar will be happy to suggest some from the regular congregation.
